Which EU rules apply to stand up pouches?
The main framework is the PPWR, the SUP Directive and the EU Waste Framework Directive. These rules push for less waste, better design and more recycling. Each country applies them differently, so always check national rules and timelines.
What will change towards 2030 and 2038?
Towards 2030 and 2038, requirements will become stricter. Packaging must reach higher recyclability and rules to reduce empty space will be tightened. For stand up pouches this means: move towards mono material, a simple structure, less ink and coatings, clear sorting instructions and efficient formats, so you are ready for the next milestones.
Do I need to use recycled content?
Yes, for certain plastic packaging, minimum recycled content percentages apply from 2030. The exact requirements depend on the country and product category. Design your pouch with this in mind, choose mono material where possible and plan procurement of certified recyclates in time.
What will consumer labelling look like?
From 2028, your packaging must clearly state what material it is and which bin it belongs in. After that, additional requirements follow, such as fixed labels and often a QR code for reusable packaging and specific collection streams.
What does UPV mean for your pouches and other packaging?
UPV is the Dutch term for extended producer responsibility, EPR. It means you, as producer or importer, contribute to collection, sorting, recycling and consumer information. In practice, you register per country, report yearly what you place on the market, units, weight and material type, and pay a waste management fee. Design choices matter, mono material and clear sorting instructions often lead to lower fees through eco modulation. We help with registration, material classification and reporting for your pouches.
Does the reuse obligation apply to pouches with direct food contact?
For pouches with direct food contact, an exemption from the reuse obligation usually applies. Other obligations still apply, such as design for recycling, choosing mono material, clear sorting instructions and labelling from 2028, EPR registration and reporting and, where applicable, recycled content targets. We check what is needed per country and application.
