What does compostable mean for food packaging?

Compostable means that packaging can be broken down by microorganisms under specific conditions. There is a difference between industrially compostable and home compostable.

Industrially compostable packaging requires controlled conditions, such as specific temperatures, moisture levels, and processing times. The EN 13432 standard describes the requirements packaging must meet to be considered industrially compostable. Certifications like OK Compost Industrial confirm this property.

Important for consumers: compostable does not automatically mean the packaging belongs on the backyard compost pile. Also, not all regions in Europe have the right industrial composting facilities for these materials. Clear disposal instructions on the packaging are therefore essential.

Are compostable stand-up pouches truly food-safe?

Compostable stand-up pouches can be food-safe if the material is suitable and tested for direct food contact. However, food safety is not the only factor; the barrier properties matter too.

A pouch can be food-safe but still not be the best choice for every type of food. Coffee, tea, nuts, spices, or powders all have different requirements for oxygen, moisture, and aroma protection. That is why we always check if the material matches your product perfectly.

Are compostable pouches suitable for coffee and other strong aromas?

Packaging is especially important for coffee and aromatic products. Freshly roasted coffee releases gas and often needs a degassing valve. At the same time, the packaging must prevent oxygen from entering and spoiling the aroma.

Compostable pouches can work for certain applications, but they do not always achieve the same barrier properties as modern recyclable or aluminum-free barrier packaging. Therefore, we often recommend recyclable stand-up pouches with the right barrier and valve for coffee. This keeps the aroma protected while remaining a more sustainable choice.

What is the difference between compostable and recyclable packaging?

Compostable packaging is designed to break down under specific conditions. Recyclable packaging is designed to enter a recycling stream after use and be reused as raw material.

In practice, recyclable is currently the better solution for many food packagings. Recyclable mono-materials like PE or PP offer better barrier properties, are more widely available, and fit better into existing European waste systems. Compostable packaging can be useful but is not automatically more sustainable if it cannot be processed correctly or does not protect the product well enough.

What certifications should sustainable packaging have?

This depends on the type of packaging. For compostable packaging, EN 13432 and OK Compost Industrial are key benchmarks. These certifications refer to industrial compostability.

For recyclable packaging, the material structure is the main factor. Mono-materials like PE or PP are much easier to recycle than traditional multi-layer materials. For food producers, it is also vital that the packaging is certified food-safe and fits the intended application.

Can I also have compostable pouches printed?

Yes, compostable pouches can be printed if the material, printing technique, and order volume match. At PouchDirect, we evaluate these projects individually because compostable materials do not fit every design requirement or application.

For many customers, printed recyclable packaging is the more practical alternative. It offers more options for barrier, design, availability, and pricing. For smaller quantities, a sustainable standard pouch with a label can also be a great solution.

What is the minimum order quantity for sustainable stand-up pouches?

Unprinted sustainable stand-up pouches from stock are available at PouchDirect from small quantities, often starting at 100 pieces. This is ideal for start-ups, small producers, test batches, or seasonal products.

For custom printed or tailor-made stand-up pouches, different minimum quantities apply. These depend on the material, format, and printing technique, usually starting around 5,000 pieces. We are happy to advise you on the best option for your volume.

How long does the delivery of sustainable packaging take?

Stock items are usually shipped quickly. The exact delivery time depends on the destination country, order volume, and shipping service. You will see current delivery details during the checkout process.

For printed or custom-made packaging, the delivery time is longer because material, design, printing proof, and production need to be coordinated. Please plan these projects in time. Our packaging experts will help you set up the right timeline.

What do compostable stand-up pouches cost compared to conventional packaging?

The cost of compostable stand-up pouches depends heavily on the material, format, barrier, features, printing, and order volume. Compared to standard packaging, compostable solutions can have a higher unit price, especially for smaller quantities or specific material requirements.

This is due to the special material properties and the limited availability of suitable compostable packaging films. The larger the volume and the clearer your requirements for format, print, and barrier, the better we can calculate a suitable solution.

At PouchDirect, we always check if compostable is economically and functionally viable for your product. In many cases, recyclable packaging is a strong alternative: offering excellent product protection, reliable availability, and an attractive price-performance ratio. We are happy to advise you based on your product, volume, and sustainability goals.
