What are mono material stand up pouches?
Mono material stand up pouches are built entirely from one polymer family, for example PE PE or PP PP. That means the layers, zipper and any valve are made from the same type too. Because there is no mix of different plastics, sorting systems recognise the pouch better, separation is easier and the material can be recycled more efficiently. You avoid combinations like PET aluminium PE, which improves recyclability a lot. Depending on your product, you usually choose PE or PP, optionally with a barrier solution that stays within the same material family.
Can mono material pouches have multiple layers and still remain recyclable?
Yes. Mono material pouches can have multiple layers, as long as all layers stay within the same polymer family, for example PE PE or PP PP, including the zipper and any valve. This way you combine extra strength, better sealing and barrier performance with easy sorting and high recyclability as mono material. Local collection guidelines can differ per country or municipality.
Do mono material pouches provide enough protection?
Yes. With a very thin EVOH layer in a PE or PP pouch, you get a strong barrier against oxygen and moisture without mixing different plastics. The pouch remains mono material and is easier to sort and recycle. Simply put, EVOH acts like a very thin shield between layers, keeping your product well protected. Ideal for products like coffee, nuts, granola and spices where freshness and aroma matter.
Why are mono material pouches easier to recycle?
Because they consist of one polymer family, they are recognised better by sorting systems, layers do not need to be separated, and they fit existing recycling streams more easily. That makes sorting faster and cleaner, increases the quality of the recycled material and improves the chance of real reuse. For best recyclability, choose PE PE or PP PP, including zipper and valve in the same material.
When is a mono material pouch less suitable?
Mono can be less suitable when extremely high barrier requirements or special finishes are needed. Think very long shelf life, extra light barrier, strong aroma retention, or processes like pasteurisation, retort and hot fill. A pronounced metallic look or certain special coatings also do not always match mono, even with EVOH. In those cases, we look for the best possible solution while keeping recyclability as high as possible.
Are mono material pouches suitable for my product, and when do you choose PE or PP?
Often yes. Together we assess your product properties, required shelf life and local processing streams. Think sensitivity to fat and moisture, aroma retention, required protection, size, filling process and sealing method. Based on that, we advise a suitable mono material pouch, usually PE or PP, optionally with a thin EVOH barrier layer within the same material family. If your application needs extremely high barrier or heat processes, we look at an alternative with comparable recyclability. Want certainty? Request a sample and we will test with you.
Do you supply mono PE and mono PP stand up pouches?
Yes. We supply mono material stand up pouches in mono PE and mono PP as doypack and flat bottom, available from stock. EVOH barrier options are available. For custom solutions, almost anything is possible, from special sizes and windows to printing and extra features.
