The European Union has recently introduced new legislation to reduce the amount of single use plastics in Europe. Known as the EU Single Use Plastics (SUP) Directive, this law prohibits the sale of certain single-use plastic items, such as straws, cutlery, and plates. Companies that use single-use plastic must contribute to the cost of cleaning up plastic waste.

A key point to note: the new legislation only applies to packaging where products are packaged for immediate consumption and come in a single portion. Packaging including pouches made for multiple portions are exempt.

The goal of this law is to combat plastic litter. This is important because plastic litter is a major environmental problem. By banning the sale of certain single-use plastic items and obligating companies to contribute to the cost of waste management, the EU hopes to reduce the amount of plastic waste.
