What PouchDirect does
What is your sustainability vision for stand up pouches in one sentence?
Smart material choices, mono material where possible, plus practical execution from design to collection, so stand up pouches reduce emissions and become part of the solution.
Which steps do you take when designing sustainable pouches?
We design using reduce, reuse and recycle. Where possible we choose mono material and lightweight solutions, aligned with your full chain from filling to collection. Our specialists support you and advise step by step on the most sustainable pouch for your product.
How do you approach circularity and innovation?
We design for today’s mechanical recycling and choose mono material where possible. At the same time, we take emerging technologies such as chemical recycling into account, so your packaging works in the current chain and is ready for what is coming.
Do you work differently per country?
Yes. We tailor our advice to local rules, collection systems and market expectations in each country where you sell. Think EPR registration, labelling from 2028, the right recycling icons and language, and the available recycling streams for paper and plastic. Per country, we advise the best choice, for example mono PE or mono PP, or 100% paper, including the right documentation and sorting instructions.
Do you support sustainability initiatives?
Yes. We support initiatives such as Trees for All, The Ocean Cleanup and Justdiggit. We choose projects that show measurable impact and fit our vision of less waste and more nature restoration.
Can I request samples or an advice call?
Absolutely. We can quickly plan a short intake call focused on your product, size and requirements. Based on that, we advise the right stand up pouch, doypack, flat bottom or side gusset bag, for example mono PE or mono PP. You receive free samples to test, including tips for sealing, filling and maintaining freshness. If you want to go further, we support you end to end, from choosing size and finish to artwork and design. You get clear templates, a practical checklist and the right documentation such as the food safety declaration. We also advise on recycling instructions and country specific requirements. This helps you move quickly to packaging that fits and is ready for your supply chain.
Wat doet PouchDirect
Certification
With every order you receive a Food Safety Declaration, the DoC.
With every order you receive the food safety declaration, the Declaration of Compliance (DoC). On request, we can include additional test reports and certificates, tailored to your product and market.
Which EU rules does the DoC comply with?
Our DoC complies with Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004, Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 and Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006 on GMP. All relevant migration tests have been performed and passed.
Can you provide extra documents?
Yes. We include everything that is legally required as standard, such as the food safety declaration (DoC). On request, we can send additional documents, for example a REACH statement, a product specification and available migration reports. We cannot perform product specific tests for you, but you can request samples from us to test yourself or via your lab. We are happy to advise which approach and documents fit your situation.
Which substances are not in your products?
Our materials contain no phthalates, no heavy metals, no bisphenols such as BPA, no PVC or PVDC, no MOSH or MOAH, and no PFAS compounds. This matters because it helps prevent unnecessary migration into food, keeps taste and aroma clean, and supports compliance with EU requirements for food contact. We choose this deliberately, with strict supplier selection, fixed quality checks and a complete food safety declaration with every order. This way you can be confident your stand up pouch or doypack is food safe, today and tomorrow.
Can you help with recycling logos and sorting instructions on the packaging?
Yes. We provide clear information on recyclability and the right icons for your stand up pouch or doypack. For stock items we keep the print clean. For 100% recyclable items, the information is printed on the bottom of the pouch. If you choose custom packaging, you decide which icons and text to include.
Certificering
Legislation
Which EU rules apply to stand up pouches?
The main framework is the PPWR, the SUP Directive and the EU Waste Framework Directive. These rules push for less waste, better design and more recycling. Each country applies them differently, so always check national rules and timelines.
What will change towards 2030 and 2038?
Towards 2030 and 2038, requirements will become stricter. Packaging must reach higher recyclability and rules to reduce empty space will be tightened. For stand up pouches this means: move towards mono material, a simple structure, less ink and coatings, clear sorting instructions and efficient formats, so you are ready for the next milestones.
Do I need to use recycled content?
Yes, for certain plastic packaging, minimum recycled content percentages apply from 2030. The exact requirements depend on the country and product category. Design your pouch with this in mind, choose mono material where possible and plan procurement of certified recyclates in time.
What will consumer labelling look like?
From 2028, your packaging must clearly state what material it is and which bin it belongs in. After that, additional requirements follow, such as fixed labels and often a QR code for reusable packaging and specific collection streams.
What does UPV mean for your pouches and other packaging?
UPV is the Dutch term for extended producer responsibility, EPR. It means you, as producer or importer, contribute to collection, sorting, recycling and consumer information. In practice, you register per country, report yearly what you place on the market, units, weight and material type, and pay a waste management fee. Design choices matter, mono material and clear sorting instructions often lead to lower fees through eco modulation. We help with registration, material classification and reporting for your pouches.
Does the reuse obligation apply to pouches with direct food contact?
For pouches with direct food contact, an exemption from the reuse obligation usually applies. Other obligations still apply, such as design for recycling, choosing mono material, clear sorting instructions and labelling from 2028, EPR registration and reporting and, where applicable, recycled content targets. We check what is needed per country and application.

How does the material choice of your stand up pouch affect the CO2 footprint?
Lightweight mono materials like mono PE or mono PP can lower your CO2 footprint. You use less raw material per pouch, need less energy in production, and you can transport more pouches per box or pallet. Package to fit your product with thinner films, this reduces grams per unit and emissions per shipment. Where possible, choose mono material and a smaller size. That saves across the whole chain, from raw material to end of life.
Is a lighter stand up pouch always better for the environment?
Usually yes, as long as product protection and shelf life stay strong so you prevent waste. Do not make the pouch so light that it tears or loses barrier performance. Test the thinnest workable film for your doypack, Flat Bottom or side gusset pouch.
How does recycling reduce the CO2 emissions of stand up pouches?
Good collection and high quality recycling reduce the demand for virgin raw materials and save energy in production, which lowers CO2 emissions. With clear sorting instructions and mono material pouches, you increase the chance of real reuse. Dispose of packaging empty, clean and dry for best results.
Which measures can I take right away?
Choose a smaller size and thinner film. Fill more compactly so there is less empty space. Where possible, use mono material such as PE or PP and avoid unnecessary coatings and metallic layers. Limit ink use, keep colours simple and add clear sorting instructions. Standardise components like zipper and valve within the same material family. Test the lowest workable film thickness for your doypack, flat bottom or side gusset bag, and request samples to check sealing and barrier performance.
Do stand up pouches reduce transport emissions, and how?
Yes. Stand up pouches are light and compact, so more fit per box and per pallet. You need fewer shipments, which reduces fuel use and CO2 emissions per delivery.
