Resealable packaging: Everything you need to know about stand-up pouches with a ziplock

A resealable stand-up pouch, commonly referred to as a ziplock bag, is a flexible packaging solution featuring an integrated press-to-close zipper. This closure allows the end-user to easily reseal the packaging after the initial opening. For manufacturers and webshops, resealable packaging offers a great balance between product protection, extended freshness, and maximum convenience for the customer.

On this page, we explain everything about the different types of zippers, why they are so popular, and which closures we can supply directly from stock or custom-made.

Available directly from stock (Standard range)

For most products, a standard solution is more than sufficient. However, if you have specific requirements, a lot is possible for larger print runs. We divide our closures into two categories: available directly from stock and custom solutions.

  • The Standard Ziplock (Press-to-close): The most popular closure. The system consists of two plastic profiles on the inside of the pouch that click seamlessly together. Ideal and cost-effective for general use, such as nuts, sweets, seeds, and pet food.
  • The Pocket Zipper (Front Zipper): An innovative closure hidden at the front of the stand-up pouch. As a result, the top of the pouch is completely open during filling, significantly speeding up the (automated) filling process. Moreover, the consumer always tears the pouch open cleanly and straight.
  • No Zipper: Not every product requires a resealable function. For 'single-use' products (consumed in one go) or products that the consumer stores at home in their own jar, a stand-up pouch without a zipper is an excellent choice. Additionally, some models are less suitable for a zipper because the opening becomes too small for filling or for the end-user to access the contents.

Custom solutions (From 5,000 pieces)

Do you have a unique product or specific requirements? From 5,000 pieces, we can produce fully customised stand-up pouches for you, including specialised closures:

  • Hook-and-loop closure (Velcro): Ideal for very fine powders (such as protein powder or flour) that could block a standard press-to-close zipper.
  • Slider Zipper: Equipped with a small plastic slider, perfect for heavier bulk packaging (such as 5 kg dog food or washing powder).
  • Child-Resistant Zipper: A legally required, certified closure for hazardous substances, medication, or CBD products, which requires the user to perform two actions simultaneously. Can be supplied with an ISO 8317 certificate upon request.

Frequently asked questions about stand-up pouches with ziplock (FAQ)

FAQ

What is the difference between a standard ziplock and a front zipper?

A standard ziplock is located at the top on the inside of the pouch. A front zipper (or pocket zipper) is incorporated into the front (or back) of the packaging. Because of this, the top of the pouch is fully and widely open during filling, which significantly speeds up the (automated) filling process. We supply both options directly from stock.

Do I still need to seal a stand-up pouch with a zipper after filling?

Yes, we strongly recommend this. A zipper closes the bag neatly for the consumer, but it does not guarantee a 100% oxygen barrier before sale and is not tamper-evident. Above the ziplock, there is a specific area to heat-seal the pouch closed after filling. This ensures your product is optimally protected until the first use.

Can I have stand-up pouches with a zipper printed?

Absolutely! Our unprinted stock stand-up pouches are perfect for applying your own labels. Do you want a fully printed stand-up pouch with a zipper? This is possible as a custom project starting from 5,000 pieces.

Does the ziplock take up space (volume) in the pouch?

Yes, the closure is always positioned a few centimetres below the top edge of the pouch. In addition, space must be left above it to seal the bag. Therefore, never fill a pouch to the absolute brim. We advise always allowing some extra margin for the filling volume when choosing the size.

Can a resealable stand-up pouch hold liquids?

A standard ziplock is ideal for dry and solid products, but it is not designed to store liquids leak-proof under pressure. For liquids and beverages, we recommend our stand-up pouches without a zipper (only sealed) or stand-up pouches with a screw cap (spout pouches).

Are stand-up pouches with a zipper suitable for the freezer?

Yes, most of our stand-up pouches and standard ziplocks perform excellently in the freezer. The closure remains flexible and functional at low temperatures. Want to be sure if the combination of your product and the freezer works well? Simply order a sample pouch to test it yourself.

Are ziplock closures recyclable?

That depends on the material of the pouch. Does the entire stand-up pouch consist of a single type of material (a mono-material, such as 100% PE or PP)? Then the zipper is made of exactly the same material, and the entire packaging can be disposed of with plastic waste for optimal recycling. If the bag consists of mixed layers, such as paper or aluminium, different guidelines apply.
