Doypack with or without a window: What’s the best choice for your product?

A doypack with a window lets customers see exactly what’s inside. A doypack without a window offers greater protection from light. The best choice depends on your product and its desired shelf life.

Not all products are equally sensitive to light, oxygen or moisture. For some products, light can affect colour, flavour, aroma or nutrients. The extent of this effect varies by product and also depends on the duration and intensity of light exposure.

At PouchDirect, we consider your product, its desired shelf life and the level of protection it needs. This helps you choose a doypack that meets your product’s requirements.

Why choose a doypack with a window?

For visually appealing products, a window can be a real advantage. Customers can immediately see the product’s colour, texture and quality.

Examples include granola, nuts, dried fruit, sweets, tea, herbs and snacks. Visibility can help build trust, particularly when natural ingredients or a variety of colours are key selling points.

A window doesn’t have to be large, either. A narrow vertical strip or a small transparent section can be enough to show the product.

The benefit is clear: your product partly sells itself.

However, it is worth checking whether your product is sensitive to light and considering the shelf life you want to achieve. A window is particularly suitable when visibility matters and the product’s protection requirements allow it.

When is a doypack without a window the better choice?

A doypack without a window is usually the most sensible choice when light can affect the product’s quality or shelf life.

This applies to products such as coffee, certain types of tea, herbs, food supplements, nuts and other products containing fats, oils, aromas or light-sensitive ingredients.

Direct sunlight in particular can affect colour, flavour, aroma or nutrients. Prolonged exposure to artificial light can also play a role in very sensitive products.

An opaque pouch helps protect the contents from light. The level of protection depends on the materials used and the pouch’s structure.

Does a window automatically mean less protection?

Against light, yes. But that is not necessarily the case for oxygen and moisture.

A transparent window allows more light to reach the product than fully opaque packaging does. How much this matters depends on the product and the amount of light the packaging is exposed to.

For protection against oxygen and moisture, you need to look at the pouch’s material structure. A pouch with a window can still offer good protection against both.

Is your product very sensitive to light? Then a fully opaque pouch is usually the safer choice. Would you like customers to be able to see the product? A window could be a good option, provided it allows for the level of protection your product needs.

What is the difference between UV light and ordinary light?

UV light is light we cannot see. Sunlight contains UV radiation, which can have an additional effect on light-sensitive products.

But UV light is not the only factor. Ordinary visible light can also affect the quality of some products, causing changes in colour, flavour, aroma or nutrients.

Supermarket lighting is therefore different from direct sunlight. It is usually less intense. Its effect depends on the product and how long it is exposed to the light.

That is why we prefer to talk about protection from light rather than protection from UV light alone.

What about mono-material doypacks?

Recyclable mono-material pouches also offer a choice between transparency and a more enclosed appearance.

Mono-material means that the packaging consists primarily of one type of plastic, such as PE or PP, and can be designed for recycling within that material stream.

The best packaging choice combines product protection, material use, recyclability and visual appeal.

What do we see in practice?

At PouchDirect, we find that brands with visually appealing products, such as granola, snacks, nuts and dried fruit, often ask for a window.

For coffee and other products with sensitive aromas or ingredients that are sensitive to light, the focus is more often on maximum product protection and a pouch without a window.

However, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. The desired shelf life and material structure can completely change the choice. Above all, choose what appeals to you.

Choosing a doypack with or without a window?

Is your main priority to let customers see the product? Then a window can be a strong feature of your packaging design.

Is your product sensitive to UV light, visible light, oxygen or moisture? Then a pouch without a window is usually the safer choice.

So don’t just focus on appearance. Start with what your product needs to maintain its quality during storage and sale.
